On 31st August 2009, the Bagong Barrio Education Fund held a movie fundraiser night at the Balwyn Cinemas in Melbourne, Australia.
Over 90 people attended the event with all funds raised going towards the ongoing development of the program.
The spirit in the room was high, as long-time sponsors mixed with general supporters of the program. Many of those in attendance had been introduced to the program via family and friends and were learning about it for the first time.
An enjoyable time was had by all as guests mingled and enjoyed a drink prior to the commencement of the movie. The room was decorated with photos of Bagong Barrio and images of sponsored students. One wall of the room was filled with the profiles of students currently – 25 in total.
Program Director James Lee addressed the audience briefly, providing background on Bagong Barrio and sharing some experiences from previous visits. The audience listened as James emphasised that 100% of sponsors’ contributions go directly to their student. To enable this, additional funds are sourced to support administrative and program development costs. The event would provide part of this important financial support.
Guests then filed into the cinema to watch The Young Victoria and the post-movie verdict was overwhelmingly positive.
The event marked the first ever public fundraising activity for the program and was a resounding success. It was the culmination of many weeks of planning and preparation, led by Australian Leadership Team member Liz Stearne.
